Pelvic Floor and Pelvic Venous Disorder (PeVD)
The pelvic floor muscles form a sling-like sheet within the pelvis. They support the pelvic organs; the bladder and urethra (where we pee from), the uterus and vagina and the rectum pass out to the exterior through this muscular sheet.
In addition, the deep veins of the pelvis form a network within this muscle sheet and pass through it to connect the veins around the ovaries and the uterus with the veins of the legs. A strong, well-functioning pelvic floor squeezes blood from these veins back towards the heart and prevents it from pooling in the pelvis in the form of varicose veins in the case of Pelvic Venous Disorder (PeVD) or Pelvic Congestion Syndrome (PCS).
Symptoms of Weakened Pelvic Floor
Some patients with Pelvic Venous Disorder (PeVD) or Pelvic Congestion Syndrome (PCS) have pelvic veins leaking blood into the back of the legs and groin. These are usually visible as varicose veins. The venous incompetency duplex ultrasound scan maps these diseased veins to help plan the treatments needed.
What Can Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy Do?
The goal of pelvic floor physiotherapy is to improve pelvic floor function through targeted exercises, lifestyle modifications, education, and hands on treatment to decrease and eliminate Pelvic Venous Disorder (PeVD) or previously known as Pelvic Congestion Syndrome (PCS) symptoms. It is a key part of the treatment especially in women who experience pain in the lower back or under carriage after sitting or standing for long periods, pain after sex (post coital pain) and those who experience symptoms of POTS (postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome). In many women, pelvic floor physiotherapy done well can provide excellent symptom control and eliminate the need for surgical procedures and operations.
